Hi
there,
nice
to
meet
you!
I'm Roel Nieskens, a creative software developer from The Netherlands who's been writing software since the Y2K problem. I love the web, fonts, webfonts, and all combinations thereof!
I work as independent developer doing frontend development and (web)font engineering using mainly CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and OpenType technology.
I do most of my computerings under the name of
.
Work
For Font Awesome I helped engineer their icon fonts and modernize the CSS used on tens of millions of websites.
For Google Fonts I created minisites showcasing new fonts, and did prototyping and font engineering for the Noto Emoji font.
For Typotheque I worked on the front-end for their new website, showcasing fonts and implementing the e-commerce side.
For The Type Founders I created minisites and worked on the Typographer interface and components.
For NaN I worked on everything front-end related for the fonts.xyz site.
For LettError I worked on the front-end side of several projects, one of which I can neither confirm nor deny.
Not work
To help myself and others understand what fonts can do, I created Wakamai Fondue.
I also share what I learn while simultaneously mangling the English language on my website.
Every once a while I escape my comfort zone and speak at conferences like TYPO Labs or CSS Day, or help teach CSS at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
I also recently gave a CSS Typography Crash Course on Kevin Powell's YouTube channel, trying to talk over my loud keyboard.
When I'm not building websites or fonts, I like writing 6502 machine language for the C64, riding and working on old motorcycles, listening to loud music, and being a funny dad.
Work again
As a computer nerd, I love tech. And as a human nerd, I love working with nice people. I'm available for hire and always up for a (virtual) coffee to talk business.
If you're interested in working together, send me an email!
